MOVE OVER STORM

There's a new High Jumper in town!

East Longmeadow's Paige Suse headlines indoor track top performers in first PVIAC meet Friday

INDOOR TRACK TOP PERFORMERS
Hundreds of athletes from around Western Mass. swarmed to Northampton Friday night as the PVIAC high school indoor track season got started at Smith College.
Many of the athletes saw the opening meet as an opportunity to set a benchmark, and hope to improve their times as the season progresses. Some athletes, including those from the Hampshire Regional teams, were competing in their first-ever meet.
But East Longmeadow high jumper Paige Suse wasted no time getting right into peak form. The junior, who won last year's Division III state title in the event, tied a PVIAC record with a jump of five feet, five inches.

Girls Indoor Track Winter Preview: East Longmeadow aims for fourth consecutive Western Mass. title

Girls Indoor Track Winter Preview: East Longmeadow aims for fourth consecutive Western Mass. title
East Longmeadow enters the 2013-2014 girls indoor track season as the favorite, but a number of programs will be looking to knock the Spartans down a notch. (Republican file photo by Dave Roback)

The East Longmeadow girls indoor track team heads into the upcoming season hoping to defend its three consecutive Western Mass. titles. Many of the athletes who brought the Spartans that title last winter return are returning this year, so it would make sense if the a fourth consecutive PVIAC championship was at the top of the list of goals for the Spartans.
But that’s not how coach East Longmeadow Michael Budd sees things.
“We don’t set a goal to win the Western Mass. championship. We never have. We’ve always said our goal is for the athlete, individually, to attain their objective,” Budd said.
“We try to set our goals and standards on performances. If everybody performs, all the wins, losses, everything else will take care of itself. I’m not worried about those things,” he continued.
The philosophy makes sense. The standard to win an event at the Western Mass. championships one year may not be the same the following season. But what the Spartans can control is their own improvement through the course of the season, so when the final stretch comes, they can be prepared.
This season, East Longmeadow’s returners include a number of athletes who improved over the course of the year to put together strong performances at the end of the season.
Senior Gabby Weithofer’s season-best long jump of 16 feet, 11.5 inches was good enough to win the Western Mass. long jump championship, and fellow senior Rebecca Varney ran her best 55m hurdle in the Division III state finals, when her time of 8.96 placed her third.
Meanwhile, junior Paige Suse won last year’s Division III state high jump when she cleared five feet, two inches on her first attempt.
Although the East Longmeadow will come in as the favorite in Western Mass., there are a number of strong programs in the area that will hope to end the Spartans’ run of PVIAC titles. One of those teams is Northampton, which won the 2009 and 2010 Western Mass. championships before East Longmeadow started its run.
Like the Spartans, the Blue Devils feature an extremely talented junior class. Super 7 selection Alex Dibrindisi is a talented long-jumper and mid-distance runner, as is her junior classmate Sophie Sharp. Coming off a successful cross-country season, junior Mariel Lutz will likely be among the top Western Mass. athletes in the 1000-meter and the mile.
Northampton has finished as the runner-up for each of East Longmeadow’s three straight Western Mass. titles, and coach Brandon Palmer said those second-place finishes will give his athletes some extra motivation this season.
“I think it was a little bit of a bitter taste in their mouth that the girls team had from last year. I think a couple of them are a little hungry to get out there, raise a trophy and take it on a nice little spin around the track,” Palmer said.
“I kind of look at East Longmeadow as the Muhammad Ali and we’re like the Joe Frazier,” he joked. “So I think we’re a little bit of an underdog, but once we get in the ring, that’s when the gloves are off.”
Despite the disappointment of Northampton’s three straight runner-up finishes, Palmer praised Budd’s work to build indoor track not just at one school but throughout the entirety of Western Mass. According to Budd, that camaraderie among the athletes and coaches in Western Mass. isn’t seen in many other sports.
“We always watch out for one another. It’s not a competitive thing. Yes, we want to beat each other but it’s more that we applaud good performances. I don’t care what school you go to,” Budd said.
“It’s a uniqueness about our sport. Yes, you want to prevail but you also want to see outstanding performances.”

Suse on winning the state high jump title:

SWEET THREE-PEAT

East Longmeadow girls indoor track team wins third consecutive title

NORTHAMPTON – For the East Longmeadow Spartans, they're once, twice, three times the champions.

The three-time champions won with 71.50 points for their third consecutive title. In second place, Northampton High had 62 points.

“We had no expectations going into tonight’s meet, we have a lot of new people and a lot of new faces,” East Longmeadow coach Michael Budd said after the meet held at Smith College. “We were just happy to be here. They were relaxed and what they did was create the finest hour in the history of East Longmeadow High School Girls Track and Field.

To clinch the title, a last lap kick in the 4x400 Meter relay by Gabriella Weithofer brought home the title for the third year in a row in that final hour.

“That’s our Captain,” Budd said. “How she goes, our team goes,” he added.

From Weithofer’s perspective the last lap chance was a daunting one, but one she reveled in.

“It was nerve-wracking, but you feel special knowing that it could be you that could push your team in the end,” Weithofer said. “I knew that we needed the points really bad and I didn’t want to let our team down.”

Weithofer leapt 16’ 11.5” to take the long jump title.

“I didn’t expect to win,” Weithofer said humbly. “I have to thank all of my coaches,” she added.

To win any title in any team sport, depth has to come into play and that’s something the Spartans have in spades. The team also has some serious camaraderie.

“It’s so fun being on this team,” Weithofer said. “We have so much fun altogether.”

East Longmeadow’s Paige Suse took home the high jump title, with a height of 5-02.00. That event win went a long way in the Spartans’ victory on Monday night.

Westfield’s Allyson Morin took home the 1 Mile title with a time of 5:17.45. Morin, also the top-seed in the two-mile, out classed the rest of the competition by 58 seconds to take home her second win of the night.

“I’ve trained hard enough in the two-mile where it doesn’t really affect me,” Morin said. “Honestly, I just think the two mile is easier. I’m more confident in myself. I can focus on my pace for the first half of it and for the second half I can focus on finishing off well.”

Diamante Spencer upheld that notion with a scintillating 7.46 in the 55 Meter Dash. The Central star blew away the competition in the finals race. The time was the Central sprinter’s best mark of the year.

Spencer’s speed came in handy for the 4x200 Meter Relay that saw the Golden Eagles fly ahead of the competition. With a time of 1:51.58, Spencer and Luise Venderheyden led the way.

The top-seeded Venderheyden was bested in the 600 meter by Northampton Mia Toffoli. Toffoli won by mere two-tenths of a second.

Adrienne Pascucci, a speed demon in the 55 Hurdles, clocking in at 8.94, besting the competition by nearly half a second. Her finals time marks a personal and event best for the season in the event.

Pascucci was also a finalist in the long jump and high on Monday night, finishing second in both events in PVIAC’s.

Not to be excluded from the fast company, Agawam’s Ashley Monahan nearly bested her next-closest competition in the 1,000 Meters. The Brownie runner was nearly a second clear of the field in the finals heat in 3:07.00.

In the field events, Mahar’s Sabrina Silva reclaimed her crown in the shot-put. The much-heralded field athlete took home the top prize with a distance of 40 feet seven and a half inches.

Next week sees the conclusion of the indoor track season with the state finals in Roxbury. That meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center

Jet Blue has broken Kazbah's school record in the 300 dash. Dr. Phil is closing in on Scurry's freshman record in the long jump (and only after one week of training). Dalessio and Fraser have already broken Pooh Bear's freshman record in the shot put.

Could be time for another run.
