There were some INTERESTING characters on that team...

MR. SUNTER

Folks, a tragedy occurred this past year in that Bryan Sunter was killed in an auto accident ( I believe) in West Springfield. I knew Bryan as a "free spirit". I did not know him well, but he made his presence known on the Boys Cross Country team.

Bryan's Dad, Ed is holding a fund raising Golf tournament and dinner this Friday to raise money for a Cross Country scholarship in his son's name.

I have known Mr. Sunter for a long time and he's truly one of the "good guys". I give him enormous credit for wanting to put together this endeavor that shall benefit an East Longmeadow Boy and Girl affiliated with the Cross Country team.

CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE IS POSTED/INDOOR ALSO

The Fall Cross Country schedule is now on the web site. There are a lot of meets listed and many that we shall not be attending, but we can discuss ( along with the Boys team) where we might be best suited to attend.

There are some dates for Indoors without opponents. That portion of the schedule has not been published yet, but we know we have a Thursday meet listed.

FINALLY!

NEWS RELEASE

Prohibition of Jewelry Lifted in High School Track and Field

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                   Contact: Becky Oakes
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 14, 2014) — Effective with the 2015 high school track and field season, the prohibition of jewelry will be eliminated. This was one of several rules changes recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Track and Field Rules Committee at its June 16-18 meeting in Indianapolis. The committee’s recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
Becky Oakes, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Track and Field Rules Committee, said the committee determined that prohibiting jewelry in high school track and field and cross country is not necessary.
“The wearing of jewelry ordinarily presents little risk of injury to either the competitor or opponents,” Oakes said. “Elimination of the rule allows officials to focus on meet administration directly related to actual competition. Coaches continue to have the obligation to see that competitors are properly equipped.”
In other changes, language regarding the time limit to initiate a trial in the throwing and jumping events was revised. Previously, competitors in these events had to initiate a trial and carry it to completion within one minute. Beginning next year, participants must only initiate the trial within the one-minute time limit. Completion of the event will be allowed beyond the prescribed time.
Another change was made in field events involving implements. In events such as the shot put, discus, javelin and pole vault, an additional trial will be allowed when an implement breaks – and thus becomes illegal – during competition due to no fault of the competitor.
The revised note in Rules 6-2-17 and 7-2-17 reads as follows: “If a legal implement breaks during an attempt in accordance with the rules, no penalty shall be counted against the competitor and a replacement trial shall be awarded. If the implement breaks upon completion of the trial, a replacement attempt shall not be awarded and the results of the trial shall be recorded, provided it was made in accordance with the rules.”
In the discus throw, it no longer will be a foul if a competitor is out of control when exiting the back half of the circle. Also, in the discus, shot put and javelin, the requirement for the judge to call “mark” was eliminated.
Another change involves the high jump and pole vault events. A new article in Rule 7-2 will state that “a crossbar displaced by a force disassociated with the competitor after he/she is legally and clearly over the crossbar shall not be a fault and is considered a successful attempt.”
In Rule 8 involving special events, the committee approved the 1,500-meter run as an alternate for the 1,600-meter run in the decathlon and pentathlon. Oakes said when using the IAAF standard scoring, the 1,500-meter run is the standard distance. In addition, the indoor weight throw was approved for the listing of special events.
The final change involves Rule 1-4 on indoor track. Since many indoor meets are held in college facilities, the committee approved the 60-meter high hurdles and dash as alternates for the 55-meter high hurdles and dash. Oakes said this option eliminates special marking of the facilities for the hurdles and dash.
Track and field is the second-most popular sport for boys with 580,672 participants in 16,001 schools and is the No. 1 sport for girls with 472,939 participants in 15,962 schools during the 2012-13 season, according to the NFHS Athletics Participation Survey.

MOVE OVER STORM

There's a new High Jumper in town!

East Longmeadow's Paige Suse headlines indoor track top performers in first PVIAC meet Friday

INDOOR TRACK TOP PERFORMERS
Hundreds of athletes from around Western Mass. swarmed to Northampton Friday night as the PVIAC high school indoor track season got started at Smith College.
Many of the athletes saw the opening meet as an opportunity to set a benchmark, and hope to improve their times as the season progresses. Some athletes, including those from the Hampshire Regional teams, were competing in their first-ever meet.
But East Longmeadow high jumper Paige Suse wasted no time getting right into peak form. The junior, who won last year's Division III state title in the event, tied a PVIAC record with a jump of five feet, five inches.

Girls Indoor Track Winter Preview: East Longmeadow aims for fourth consecutive Western Mass. title

Girls Indoor Track Winter Preview: East Longmeadow aims for fourth consecutive Western Mass. title
East Longmeadow enters the 2013-2014 girls indoor track season as the favorite, but a number of programs will be looking to knock the Spartans down a notch. (Republican file photo by Dave Roback)

The East Longmeadow girls indoor track team heads into the upcoming season hoping to defend its three consecutive Western Mass. titles. Many of the athletes who brought the Spartans that title last winter return are returning this year, so it would make sense if the a fourth consecutive PVIAC championship was at the top of the list of goals for the Spartans.
But that’s not how coach East Longmeadow Michael Budd sees things.
“We don’t set a goal to win the Western Mass. championship. We never have. We’ve always said our goal is for the athlete, individually, to attain their objective,” Budd said.
“We try to set our goals and standards on performances. If everybody performs, all the wins, losses, everything else will take care of itself. I’m not worried about those things,” he continued.
The philosophy makes sense. The standard to win an event at the Western Mass. championships one year may not be the same the following season. But what the Spartans can control is their own improvement through the course of the season, so when the final stretch comes, they can be prepared.
This season, East Longmeadow’s returners include a number of athletes who improved over the course of the year to put together strong performances at the end of the season.
Senior Gabby Weithofer’s season-best long jump of 16 feet, 11.5 inches was good enough to win the Western Mass. long jump championship, and fellow senior Rebecca Varney ran her best 55m hurdle in the Division III state finals, when her time of 8.96 placed her third.
Meanwhile, junior Paige Suse won last year’s Division III state high jump when she cleared five feet, two inches on her first attempt.
Although the East Longmeadow will come in as the favorite in Western Mass., there are a number of strong programs in the area that will hope to end the Spartans’ run of PVIAC titles. One of those teams is Northampton, which won the 2009 and 2010 Western Mass. championships before East Longmeadow started its run.
Like the Spartans, the Blue Devils feature an extremely talented junior class. Super 7 selection Alex Dibrindisi is a talented long-jumper and mid-distance runner, as is her junior classmate Sophie Sharp. Coming off a successful cross-country season, junior Mariel Lutz will likely be among the top Western Mass. athletes in the 1000-meter and the mile.
Northampton has finished as the runner-up for each of East Longmeadow’s three straight Western Mass. titles, and coach Brandon Palmer said those second-place finishes will give his athletes some extra motivation this season.
“I think it was a little bit of a bitter taste in their mouth that the girls team had from last year. I think a couple of them are a little hungry to get out there, raise a trophy and take it on a nice little spin around the track,” Palmer said.
“I kind of look at East Longmeadow as the Muhammad Ali and we’re like the Joe Frazier,” he joked. “So I think we’re a little bit of an underdog, but once we get in the ring, that’s when the gloves are off.”
Despite the disappointment of Northampton’s three straight runner-up finishes, Palmer praised Budd’s work to build indoor track not just at one school but throughout the entirety of Western Mass. According to Budd, that camaraderie among the athletes and coaches in Western Mass. isn’t seen in many other sports.
“We always watch out for one another. It’s not a competitive thing. Yes, we want to beat each other but it’s more that we applaud good performances. I don’t care what school you go to,” Budd said.
“It’s a uniqueness about our sport. Yes, you want to prevail but you also want to see outstanding performances.”

DUCK RACES RECAP

Mountain Dew receives her FOURTH Duck Race shirt on Saturday from Mrs. Dutkiewicz.

East Longmeadow hosted for the second year in a row and perhaps the event which originally started out as the Central Invitational in 1996 has a permanent home. A record 13 schools participated.

This year as well, USATF and Massachusetts Hall of Fame Starter, Mr. Ken Caouette made an appearance and helped out.
KEN CAOUETTE started the first Women's Olympic Games Marathon in 1984 in Los Angeles.
We are still not certain what the guy next to him ever did.
