ALL-WESTERN MASS SELECTIONS

Congratulations to Morgan Voight, Elisabeth Cooke and Marina Wilkins for making the first team All-Western Mass Squad for 2016.

For Morgan Voight, this is her first time selected based upon her Mile performances. She was selected as the Outstanding performer for the Outdoor team. By taking some 8 seconds off the school record in the mile, she took down the oldest school record. Morgan also holds the school record Indoors in the mile.

For Elisabeth Cooke, this is her second time so being honored. She achieved this distinction Indoors this year and was the Indoor Outstanding performer. She was also selected earlier this month as East Longmeadow's best female athlete. Cooke broke the school record in the discus once held by future Hall of Famer Danyelle' Thorpe.

For Marina Wilkins, this is certainly her first Track and Field selection as she is the undisputed best diver in Western Mass. and one of the best in the State at that craft. This is why she has been so highly successful at Pole Vault. She is the first EL selection in Pole Vault since Hall of Famer Erika Graham did so in 2004.

Our Second team selections were no slouches either.

For Abby Laughlin, she had perhaps the best career in 2015-2016. Leader of the Cross Country team that won it's first ever League title. She was the Outstanding performer for that team and also advanced to the State Championships. Abby is also a two time Western Mass. champion, and holds the most records for an individual since Hall of Famer Kara Budd.

Madison McMahon was voted as the Outstanding Newcomer for 2016. Despite being injured for most of both the Indoor and Outdoor seasons, she broke (last year's National Qualifier and future Hall of Famer) Paige Suse's freshman record in the High Jump Outdoors. She also holds the Indoor record for the same event.

The Girls team secured 19 medals at the State Sectional, one off the record set by the 2012 State Sectional Championship team. They are going to be a tough act to follow, but we're up to the challenge.

EMERIL NAMED

Elisabeth Cooke was named East Longmeadow Female Athlete of the Year by Masslive!

Her Indoor and Outdoor seasons were stellar, as she was also named Outstanding Performer by the Indoor Team.

Outdoors, she broke Danyelle' Thorpe's 2007 school record in the discus throw and also won the Western Mass. title in the same event.

In both seasons, she individually made it to the All-State Championships.

Congratulations to "Emeril" as she takes her skills to Regis College where she also was a recipient of an MSTCA scholarship.

Nicely done!

THREE TIME COACH OF THE YEAR: THANK YOU LADYSPARTANS!

The sheer delight of having the Legendary Dick Atkinson and the Incredible Lou Tozzi present me with this award makes the circle complete.

Lou Tozzi was the person that got me totally involved with the MSTCA and becoming an E-Board member. He is a huge advocate of youth sports, particularly Track and Field and is a no nonsense type of guy that puts on clinics and meets each year. As the James Bond theme goes "Nobody does it better".

I met Dick Atkinson in 1974 while running Cross Country. He is the most popular coach ever from Western Mass. When I first started coaching at the high school level, he was one of my opponents, but you would never know it. Always the gentleman and always supportive. I have learned so much from him including the ability to give instructions to runners in competition from anywhere in the arena and they KNOW it's me!

WHAT'S COOKE'IN IN EAST LONGMEADOW?

After defeating Minnechaug on Monday, the Ladyspartan Field and Track team took on nine teams at the Spartan Invitational on STAR WARS DAY which also happened to be Senior Night.

While Senior Abby Laughlin outdistanced everyone in the two mile and the 800 meters, Senior Morgan Voight came within one second of the oldest school record in the mile.

Those two performances are worthy of the highlight film, but SENIOR ELISABETH COOKE took out a nine year old record on her own. She nipped(future Hall of Famer) Danyelle' Thorpe's record in the discus! She also followed up with a victory in the shot put before donning the black for the Band's Spring Concert.

We want to thank Maestro K for loaning her out to us, but for also being "instrumental" in Ms. Thorpe's career as well.

Guess we are going to be looking very closely at the band for our next great thrower! It's not in the water, it's in the woodwind section!

MOST GRATIFYING WIN EVER!

Meaning no disrespect to the other six championship teams, this one was special because no one even considered us a threat. We were "lucky" if we finished 6th.

This is a team of "no stars", a no-name squad at best. Another reason why #masslivesucks, is that they did not even know who Abby Laughlin was.

We'll be waiting to see if they actually print any quotes. EVERYONE contributed.

This group really deserved a Championship!

2015 WESTERN MASS STATE SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the final team race of this season, the Ladyspartan Cross Country team finished 10th in one of the most challenging fields in Western Mass history and despite a key injury to the number five runner during the race.

The season does however continue onto the All-State Championships as Abby Laughlin became the second fastest East Longmeadow Harrier of all time at Stanley Park surpassing Meredith McGowan and finishing only three seconds behind future Hall of Famer, Lauren Litscher (the ONLY EL runner to ever actually WIN Western Mass.)

Abby's 15th place finish also earned her an MIAA medallion!

The other half of the "Abby Connection": Abby Rate finished 29th while also running the fastest time in her career by 18 seconds.

This season's Girls Cross Country team worked harder than any other team in school history. It earned them their first ever League Championship as well as the Ted Dutkiewicz Memorial Races title back in September.

Going back to the All-States is simply the icing on the cake and something planned upon back in August at the Pizza Shoppe.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS IN CROSS COUNTRY!

For the first time in school history, the East Longmeadow Ladyspartan Cross Country team has secured a share of a league title.

Many teams throughout the many seasons have come close, but there was always a roadblock ( or two or three) in their way.

Not that a team should be measured by a league title or for that matter even a sectional championship, it is still gratifying to have something to share for all of the hard work put in during a season.

Our biggest challenges came from a very respectable and well coached Belchertown team as well as from perennial powerhouse South Hadley. As everyone well knows, fortunes can change in just one season, so appreciation is the word of this season.

Back in 1995, having a winning record was the goal. Trying to put together consecutive winning seasons was always a challenging task - especially in a sport that is clearly not popular in school circles.

Sending an individual to the All-State meet has always proven a tough task. Only a handful of non team qualifying individuals are ever chosen. We have had our heartbreak in terms of missing out by one place or even one second. We have also had our achievements.

Since this season is not over yet, we shall see what else lies before us. In reflection winning the Division one race at the Ted Dutkiewicz Memorial Races was a great foundation.

We have had our great accomplishments as well as setbacks thus far. Injuries, illnesses, but also some surprising performances and terrific improvements along the way. Going undefeated at home was also something that has rarely happened to us.

Congratulations to everyone involved in making this season a truly memorable one, let's not let it end soon. The INVASION team of 2015 still has grounds to conquer!
